Transitions is a series of oil paintings and photographs where Christiana Beck endeavours to understand the concept of home in a rootless context. Created during ten years of extensive travel in Europe, where she currently lives, and the United States where she grew up, the works reflect the difficulty of grasping the meaning of the word 'home' – a word that becomes increasingly foreign when living in an ever-changing state of flux and movement. Consequently, Beck finds meaning in things, depicting actual objects present at a particular time, in a particular place where and when she made a conscious decision: to either stay or travel on. 'Home' then becomes the presence of an object (a trinket, a dress, a monopoly board game, a bottle of whiskey) unaffected by the absence of an actual place.
