Christiana Beck likens her process to that of a solitary travel writer documenting a journey. Working with oil paintings and particular printing processes for photography (gum bichromate and cyanotype) the techniques employed reflect the progression of travel – it is never instantaneous, there is a procedure to it and an inherent sense of waiting, of anticipation. Conscious of the fact that the process of creating involves a sense of development and growth, Beck also finds inspiration in her work as a Montessori pedagogue. The steps a child takes in learning, with multiple attempts, sensory and intellectual discovery as well as challenges and errors, are not too different from the steps an artist takes in order to develop, create and communicate their work.
Christiana received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Moore College of Art & Design in 2005 and her Masters degree in Montessori Education from Loyola University in 2011. She currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain.
